Chiropractic Care for Pediatric Constipation

When should I worry about my baby’s constipation?

In an ideal world, we want baby to be passing bowel movements at least daily, if not more. Preferably, food in and food out should happen on a regular basis. There will inevitably be times with fluctuations such as teething, recovery from mild illnesses, etc. where bowels can skip a day or two, but going beyond that can be incredibly uncomfortable for their tiny body. Your baby’s ability to pass gas is just as important as passing bowel movements too. Constipation lasting days or over a week is a definite sign your child needs extra help to get their gut moving!

There are many different tips and tricks to help baby poop, finding what works best for your baby can take time. For some, it’s as easy as changing up their positioning throughout the day with side lying play or more tummy time. Even exercises like bicycle kicks, the ILU (I Love You) massage, or elevated hips can help. In some cases probiotics are necessary for a short period of time to help regulate their gut biome. Some mediations can give short term relief, but they can cover the symptoms of a much bigger problem! Working with an experienced health provider gives extra clarity on where to start.

How do you help a constipated child?

Constipation for toddlers and kiddos tends to be different than constipation in infants. Food variety, hydration, and sense of safety when it comes to passing bowel movements plays a larger role. Dietary changes like increasing fiber through vegetables and fruit in addition to pushing more fluids than normal are all great first steps, but it can be difficult to convince a tiny human that these factors are important. Outside of their food preferences, stool withholding can be an emotional cause that changes how they feel about going to the bathroom. Fear of pain from past bowel movements or sensory issues can make pooping a very scary experience. Our focus on the body in addition to a play therapist who works on the mind does wonders!
