Chiropractic Care for Ear Infections

How can you tell if a baby has an ear infection?

Since babies can’t tell us when their ears hurt, ear infections can easily sneak up on parents. The middle ear is a tiny space, and when pressure builds there, it quickly irritates sensitive nerves. Timing and paying attention to the subtle (& sometimes obvious) signs your kiddo is struggling is important. Many babies with ear infections become fussier than usual, struggle with sleep, tug at their ears, or show changes in balance or hearing. It’s common to see a fever, more crying during feedings (since sucking and swallowing increase ear pressure), or fluid draining from the ear. These clues are your signal it’s time to have your baby checked.

Can a child's ear infection clear up on its own?

The good news is your child’s immune system naturally works super hard to clear out infections, typically within 2-3 days. Most ear infections run their course without the need for antibiotics. Since many are caused by viruses or mild bacterial infections, the body is often able to fight them off naturally. Supportive care, like lots of rest, drinking extra fluids, and extra cuddles, is often all that’s needed while the infection runs its course. Gentle chiropractic care supports your child’s body during this process by improving drainage, easing tension, and keeping the nervous system functioning at its best.

When do kids need antibiotics for an ear infection?

Although most ear infections do not need antibiotics, there are times when the infection is severe enough that further interventions are needed. These times include: for younger children, if a high fever is present, and if their pain is moderate/severe for over 48 hours. You know your child best, if they’re really struggling, checking in with your trusted health provider is recommended.

How do chiropractors help ear infections?

Kids and infants are more prone to ear infections for a variety of reasons, including having shorter and more horizontal ear tubes, still developing immune systems, and frequent exposure to germs. These infections can develop to be incredibly painful, especially if they are a recurrent problem.

We do a thorough examination of the ear, neck, jaw, and upper back for tension or restrictions that are impacting proper drainage. We have gentle ways to mobilize their ears and neck, exercises for preventative work at home, and supplement recommendations which all work together to drain the ears.
